The brief
The landscape architect drew a row of full-size street trees along a paved forecourt that takes foot traffic and the odd delivery van brief. Standard pits would have given each tree a couple of cubic metres of soil. That's nowhere near enough for the canopy on the drawings.
What we built
We excavated a continuous trench under the paving and built connected soil cell pits, so each tree shares a larger soil volume with its neighbours layout. The cells were filled with planting soil in layers, left uncompacted, then decked and wrapped in geotextile ready for the paver. Root barrier runs along the kerb and the building line. Each tree has an irrigation and aeration inlet at the trunk.
The detail that mattered
Services. The trench crossed existing services, and the cell layout was adjusted on site with the engineer's sign-off to clear them services and sign-off. The paving contractor laid straight over the deck without holding up the program program outcome.
